Toxicological investigations in a fatal and non-fatal accident due to hydrogen sulphide (H2S)poisoning
2019
Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is one of the most toxic natural gas and represents a not rare cause of fatal events in workplaces. We report here a serious accidental poisoning by hydrogen sulphide inhalation involving six sailors. Three of them died while the other three survived and were transported to the emergency room. No greenish discolouration of the body, that could be a feature of these type of deaths, was observed at autopsy. Given that blood and/or urine H2S detection does not allow to discriminate if it is related to inhalation or to putrefactive processes, the determination of thiosulphate, H2S main metabolite, is decisive. The succession of fatal events reported here can be rebuilt b…

Una Nueva Planta nella Sicilia di Filippo V: riforme militari per la “conservazione” e la difesa del Regno
2019
In 1701, in the aftermath of the ascension to the Spanish throne, Philip V began to design political and military reforms aimed at making administration more efficient and rationalizing the bureaucratic apparatus. This process had significant repercussions in the balance between the central power and representatives of local political powers who, in the delicate conjuncture of the War of Succession, redefined their participation within the Monarchy. This also happened in Sicily, where a large corpus of reform was directed to modify the island's defensive structure so as to guarantee the "conservation" of the kingdom and protect it from external and internal enemies, who worked jointly in su…

Carthage's military installations of the First Punic War on Monte Pellegrino (Palermo)
2019
The excavation in the park of Villa Belmonte (Monte Pellegrino, Palermo) has brought to light several warehouses, made with a “pseudo-frame” technique, probably with a straw roof, used for the storage of foodstuffs, given the large quantity of Punic-type amphorae found in situ, datable to around the middle of the third century BC. In addition, a section of road - about 3 m wide that proceeds in the direction of WNW- ESE, consisting of two layers of use - has been intercepted. We believe to have tracked down part of a strategic/military station used by the Carthaginian army during the crucial years of the First Punic War.
Obowiązki i prawa szeregowców autoramentu cudzoziemskiego Armii Koronnej i Litewskiej w świetle artykułów wojskowych (wojennych) oraz regulaminów z l…
2016
2019
This article proposes a study of the traditions in defensive architecture that concurred in the projects designed by Spanish military engineers for the fortification of the Valencian frontier in 1648 and 1649, in the context of the War of Catalonia (1640-1652). For this it is essential to follow the route of the Valencian adaptations to the military revolution in the matter of fortifications throughout the sixteenth century and compare them with those brought to Valencia in 1641 by the Marquis of Leganes and his engineers from the school of Milan.
Russia-Ukraine balance of military power
2017
The Russia-Ukraine conflict is the most serious test of European security in the 21st century and the forgone conclusion is that Russia can easily prevail in the conflict, but this has not been the case. This article uses balance of military power analysis to report findings on the plausible outcome of a war between Ukraine and Russia. I report findings based on realist theoretical perspectives that indicate Russian victory is unlikely because of relative balance of power where Russia has to face multiple threats diverting its military power while Ukraine can concentrate its military power for a single purpose. The findings suggest implication for policy in Russia, Ukraine, EU and the Unite…
Los Reinos Mediterraneos y la defensa de la Monarquia de Felipe III
2020
Since some decades a renewed attention to the Mediterranean area in the seventeenth century has allowed a more concrete analysis of the political and military dynamics that involved the Iberian and Italian kingdoms in the years of Philip III and Philip IV. Overcoming the idea that the "great history" had left the Mare Nostrum to affect exclusively the Atlantic front, the role of the kingdoms of the Habsburg monarchy was redefined, with the use of human and material resources, in the management of the international policy. Thus, the geostrategic function covered by each territory in the new type of conflict was highlighted: the kingdom of Granada, like that of Sicily or Naples, were involved…
La Sicilia nel Mediterraneo di Cervantes da Lepanto a Capo Corvo (1571-1613)
2018
The essay outlines the military- strategic role played by the Kingdom of Sicily in the Mediterranean between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and focuses on the major issues – already debated by contemporaries – regarding the relationship between land defense and sea …
